Entropy Plaques, 2015
Engraved aluminum plaques on machined aluminum supports
Dimensions variable, each plaque 4 x 5"
The process used to create the Entropy Plaques series began with a digital re-creation of the original Pioneer Plaque. I wrote a computer program that decomposed my illustration into line segments, slightly randomizing them in the process. I passed this mildly corrupted data back through my program 100 times, by which point the output was practically unrecognizable - like an endlessly duplicated cassette tape, eventually nothing remained but the hiss.
All computerized random number generators require some starting material. The entropy source for these plaques was seeded with anti-science quotations drawn from political talking points, including: "Galileo was branded a denier," "I'm not a scientist," "There isn't any science. It's nothing more than computer models" and so on.
